Can someone help me figure out why my car accelerates by its self?

pavara91176 asked:

I have a 1989 Honda Civic LX with a 1.5 liter throttle body engine. My car will drive 25 mph down the road without touching the gas pedal. It also tries to go by its self when I am at a full stop at a light or stop sign. The only thing I can think of is that it is an idle issue. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

probably a sensor on the transmission you need to take it in and have it looked at

Your idle speed is set too high.

89 Honda’s did not use throttle bodies,it should be port fuel injected, anyway that’s not the problem, you have a leak in the intake manifold take a look at the PCValve hose it probably got a crack in it,letting air bypass the throttle this gives the engine extra air that is not metered thereby raising the idle and the idle motor cannot adjust for it.

Your idle is set too high or you have a bad Throttle Position Sensor.

Sounds like your accelerator is sticking at the carburator. I had a similar problem with a Nissan Pickup. I could sit at a light and the engine would roar. I had to keep my foot pressed down on the break to keep from creeping forward. It turned out to be faulty accelerator linkage at the carburator. Good luck!

good chance it is a frayed throttle cable…check to see if throttle lever is against the stop when at idle…if it is not internally frayed cable is the problem…if it is check throttle lever adj screw and turn down idle…also check for vacuum leaks spray gumout around vacuum lines idle will change if leaking…repair as needed…

If you have cruise control, it could be culprit. A cruise control computer gone bad can cause this. If you do have cruise control, disconnect the cruise control cable from the throlttle body or disconnect the electronic controls. See if that cures it. If it does either replace or do away with the cruise control.
